Ingredients
- 1 loaf of French bread
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (for topping)
- Fresh berries (for serving, optional)
- Powdered sugar (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Slice the French bread into thick slices and arrange them in a baking dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are all soaked. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the bread for 40-45 minutes, or until it’s golden and set.
- Remove from the oven and sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the top.
- Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until it forms a crispy layer.
- Let cool for a few minutes, then serve with fresh berries and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
Using stale bread ensures better absorption of the custard. Feel free to get creative with toppings or variations.
