Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Red food coloring
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.
- Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract.
- In another bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually blend into the creamed mixture.
- Divide the dough in half. Mix red food coloring into one half until you achieve desired color.
- Take a teaspoon of each color and roll into ropes about 4 inches long.
- Twist the ropes together and shape into a candy cane.
- Place on ungreased baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.
- Let cool, then dust with powdered sugar if desired.
