Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Red food coloring
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract.
  4. In another bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually blend into the creamed mixture.
  5. Divide the dough in half. Mix red food coloring into one half until you achieve desired color.
  6. Take a teaspoon of each color and roll into ropes about 4 inches long.
  7. Twist the ropes together and shape into a candy cane.
  8. Place on ungreased baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.
  9. Let cool, then dust with powdered sugar if desired.
