Delicious buttery apple pie bars featuring a flaky crust and warm spiced apple filling, perfect for family gatherings.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 to 5 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for filling)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (for filling)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- A pinch of ground cloves
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk or cream (for glaze)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Reserve 1 cup for topping.
- Press the remaining crumb mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking pan. Bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden.
- In another bowl, toss sliced apples with flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
- Spread the apple mixture over the pre-baked crust and sprinkle reserved crumb mixture on top.
- Return to the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and drizzle over cooled bars.
- Using parchment overhang, lift the bars out, cut into squares or bars, and serve.
Notes
Mixing different apple varieties enhances flavor. Adjust sweetness based on the type of apples used.
