Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 to 5 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (for filling)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • A pinch of ground cloves
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk or cream (for glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Reserve 1 cup for topping.
  3. Press the remaining crumb mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking pan. Bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. In another bowl, toss sliced apples with flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  5. Spread the apple mixture over the pre-baked crust and sprinkle reserved crumb mixture on top.
  6. Return to the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and drizzle over cooled bars.
  8. Using parchment overhang, lift the bars out, cut into squares or bars, and serve.

Notes

Mixing different apple varieties enhances flavor. Adjust sweetness based on the type of apples used.
