Description

A heartwarming holiday dessert featuring layers of rich chocolate cake, cream, and cherries, perfect for festive gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix (or 1 homemade chocolate cake)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for whipping)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups canned or fresh cherries (pitted, with juice or syrup)
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice (from the canned cherries or fresh)
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings (or grated chocolate)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven as per the instructions on your cake mix box or your homemade cake recipe.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, prepare the cake mix according to the package instructions. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  3. Pour the batter into a greased baking dish and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes.
  4. Once baked, let the cake cool completely on a wire rack.
  5. In a medium bowl, pour in the heavy cream and add in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Beat until stiff peaks form.
  6. If using canned cherries, drain and reserve the juice. If using fresh cherries, pit and halve them. Mix cherries with reserved cherry juice.
  7. In a large trifle dish or glass bowl, start layering ingredients: cubed chocolate cake, cherries with juice, vanilla pudding, and whipped cream. Repeat layers until top of the dish is reached, finishing with whipped cream.
  8. Sprinkle dark chocolate shavings on top and dust with cocoa powder if desired.
  9. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to let flavors meld.

Notes

For a delightful presentation, use a trifle bowl. You can also add crushed cookies or other fruits for variations.
